FACEEE

The 5th International Exhibition on Media Art and Information Aesthetics(MAIA), Media+ Life: Sensorial Collaboration

Artists: Yu-Jin Yoon, Hyo-Jin Kim, and Kang-Hee Lee

FACEEE is the unprecedented media art that is able to interact for gesture recognition. This great media art, far beyond static frame, is not only three dimensional but also dynamic art work. It shows a possible example that the media art can be applied to daily life. Arduino, Kinect, and vvvv program are used for this art work. Analog sensibility is expressed by using a frame and fabrics. The mask, may be treated as Installation Art, gives users a great experience that is interacting with their head.

Due to widely spreading of digital cameras and rapidly developed mobile devices with camera, we may be able to take a picture at any moment and any place. People always want to take a picture and share it with others. As doing so, people are more obsessed with their appearance and caring about how they look. Even though a lot of attention to appearance may make them more beautiful, it prevents from expressing the internal image. Thus, we would like to express the inner feelings.

Generally, we imagine the heart as a mediator to represent our mind. We may express the excited and nervous feeling of our mind by using the movement of heart rather than by using the face. Also by manipulating the camera image of themselves, people could know that this image is also their other expression of themselves. The Pulse-Sensor is used to measure the heart rate of the audience. The heart rate is graphed by LED. Finally the media art could be experienced by the audience.

This work is classified as two parts; the motor that takes a picture and the camera that people use. There are two motors ; one is responsible for the horizontal movement called Stepping Motor and the other is Servo Motor, which is responsible for the vertical movement. The Motors get the figures by the sensor and adjust the speed and the angle of the servo motor. After horizontal movement, vertical motion draws a heart rate graph. The camera films to express the audience’s heart rate. At this time, by setting the camera's shutter speed low, the graph represents the afterimage of the LED.

This art work operates if there are the power supply to the Arduino and the motor. In front of the artwork there must be a camera and the shutter speed should be set to less than 8 seconds. People just need to wear the heart rate sensor that connected with the art work and shoot the graph that is drawn by the art work.
